Awareness Sessions With Miners

Concomitant to the Sub-National Consultations, a series of awareness fora is being convened to provide information on the LCDS and an opportunity for discussion. To date the forest producers and miners association have convened sessions as well as the grouping of women's organizations. Outreach activities are being conducted by the GGMC to mining areas while the North Rupununi District Development Board (NRDDB) has conducted awareness among youths and communities in the North Rupununi. The Office of Climate Change is also responding to requests for presentations and fora are being planned with labour, youth and other organizations.

Region 1 Consultation / Information Dissemination

Region 1 is a region of Essequiban Guyana which is located in the northwest of the country. It covers an area of 20,339 km². It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the region of Pomeroon-Supenaam to the east, the region of Cuyuni-Mazaruni to the south and Venezuela to the west. Major settlements include the regional capital Mabaruma, Port Kaituma, Matthew's Ridge, Morawhanna, Towakaima, Koriabo, Hosororo, Arakaka and Moruca. Barima and Waini are two rivers that flow through the densely forested and sparsely populated region.

Region 2 Consultation / Information Dissemination

Region 2 is one of the 10 Regions of Guyana. The Region has a population of approximately 49 000 people, predominantly Amerindians.

The complete list of representatives of communities is included in Appendix B and their feedback and comments are detailed in Appendix A. The consultation session brought together stakeholders from a number of communities, including Toshaos, Senior Counsels, and residents.  As part of the programme, there was a discussion session with participants to allow for discussions, interaction and feedback.

At the launch of the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS), on Monday 8th June, 2009, details of the consultation process were communicated to all stakeholders and a timeline of June to September, 2009 was outlined for this purpose. The future development of the LCDS was outlined with a clear, inclusive and transparent approach taken to sub-national consultations aimed at sensitizing the nation on the various aspects, implications and requirements of the Strategy and to receive feedback.
